Notice of Changes to Invoice Numbers Format for Invoices and Credit Notes in India
We would like to inform you that effective from 22 March 2025, there will be changes to the invoice number format for all types of invoices and credit notes. As required by legal tax regulations, the invoice number format will incorporate the Official Document Number (ODN) in invoices and credit notes in India. Consequently, the format will shift from a 10-digit format to a 16-digit alphanumeric format, including state codes.
For example, the invoice number transitions from '7000000234' to 'MH25IN1000000000' for the Maharashtra state.
You will notice updated formats for regular invoices, credit notes, bills of supply, and commercial credit notes. Additionally, the new invoice number format will be available on MyFinance. These updates are aligned with the legislative provisions introduced under the Goods and Services Tax in India, and no major system changes are expected. We encourage you to review and update internal processes or systems as needed to ensure a smooth transition.
