We would like to remind you of important regulatory changes under IMDG Code Amendment 42-24, that became mandatory as of 01 January 2026 and applies to the carriage of battery-powered vehicles.

Placarding requirements (SP 962)

To support compliance with IMDG Code Amendment 42-24 and to account for varying port interpretations, it is recommended that hazardous containers subject to Special Provision 962 (SP 962) are placarded on all four sides.
Customers are encouraged to verify placarding prior to gate-in to avoid potential disruption.

Updated UN Classification for Battery-Powered Vehicles

The generic classification UN 3171, Class 9 – “Battery-powered vehicle” is no longer permitted for lithiumor sodium-ion powered vehicles.

All applicable shipments must be declared using the following Class 9 UN entries, as appropriate:

  • UN 3556 – Vehicle, Lithium Ion Battery Powered
  • UN 3557 – Vehicle, Lithium Metal Battery Powered
  • UN 3558 – Vehicle, Sodium Ion Battery Powered

Customer Action Required

  • Ensure all vehicle shipments are declared using the correct UN number listed above.
  • Verify that containers are placarded on all four sides in accordance with SP 962 prior to gate-in.
  • Confirm that booking data and transport documentation fully reflect these requirements.

Please note that non-compliant shipments may be delayed, rejected, or subject to penalties, as these requirements are now fully enforceable.
