Advisory – Rail Network Disruptions in Italy During Summer 2026
Due to a significant program of railway infrastructure works scheduled across the Italian rail network through the end of September, intermodal services connecting the Ligurian ports with major inland hubs may experience operational constraints. These activities are part of broader network enhancement projects but are expected to impact rail capacity and service reliability during the summer period.
The intermodal service to and from Vado, Genoa, and La Spezia will remain available; however, it will be more exposed to delays and unplanned cancellations. To mitigate disruption and maintain service continuity, alternative rail routings are being implemented wherever possible. However, these contingency solutions may result in longer transit times, reduced network flexibility, and a more limited ability to recover from any accumulated delays.
We continue to work closely with rail operators and infrastructure managers to minimize the impact on cargo flows and provide timely updates as the situation evolves.
Key Network Restrictions
- From 2 August to 16 August, the closure of the Verona–Vicenza railway line may result in capacity constraints between the Ligurian ports and Padua.
- From 17 August to 14 September, the closure of the railway line via Ovada may result in capacity constraints for 40HC containers moving from Liguria to all hubs.
- From 24 August to 29 August, due to a railway line interruption, the rail service on the Vado–Verona route and vice versa will be unavailable.
We encourage customers to plan shipments as far in advance as possible during the affected periods. The information above is based on the latest infrastructure work schedules and operator communications and may be subject to change.
While the exact operational impact of each intervention cannot be predicted, Maersk will continue to monitor the situation closely and implement mitigation measures where possible to support service continuity.
Trucking alternatives will remain available throughout the affected period; however, any additional costs related to contingency trucking solutions will remain the responsibility of the customer, as these disruptions are outside Maersk's control.
