Ocean transport or ocean freight shipping is the method of transporting containerised cargo loaded onto vessels by ocean. It plays a critical role in global trade by enabling businesses to move large volumes of cargo such as raw materials, manufactured goods, and consumer products between continents reliably and cost-effectively. Over 90% of all the global trade is carried by ocean transportation.

As a general rule, shipments weighing more than 100 kg, or consisting of multiple cartons, will be sent by ocean transport. Standardised containers are designed and built for intermodal freight transport. This means containers can move seamlessly across transport modes – from ship to rail to truck – without the need to unload and reload the cargo.
