What can trends reveal about an industry—and how can businesses harness them?

That’s the focus of  The Logistics Trend Map, which offers insights into 30 key logistics trends through an interactive map and a downloadable report, featuring in-depth analysis across eight industries.

In the third video of this series, we dive into how the top trends and challenges are shaping the fashion and lifestyle industry, where last mile delivery and e-commerce emerge as top topics.

Marijn Visser, Global Vertical Head of Lifestyle at A.P Moller-Maersk gives his insights in this video.

Top five trends for the fashion & lifestyle industry:

    1. Last Mile Delivery Innovations
    2. Supply Chain Visibility
    3. E-Commerce
    4. Internet of Things
    5. Digital Transformation

From a survey of 570 global logistics decision makers for The Logistics Trend Map, 90% of those in the fashion and lifestyle industry rated last mile delivery innovations as a critical trend. Combined with e-commerce, which came out as the third top trend (83% of logistics decision makers in the industry), it shows how online sales, which grew substantially during the Covid pandemic, are still growing. This has caused the sector to evolve, as companies need to decide which online channels to work with, and how to set up the right logistics and digital infrastructure to support that.

The internet of things devices is the fourth top trend, mentioned by 82% of decision makers in the industry, although currently it is only fully implemented by 49% of the companies surveyed. Studies by McKinsey highlight that combining IoT with artificial intelligence in the supply chain could cut logistics costs by up to 15% and boost inventory accuracy by 35%. These advancements are vital for businesses to stay competitive and evolve their transformative technologies for future challenges.

But with every connection, and every type of digital solution, the risks need to be assessed and monitored, which is why cyber attacks is cited as a challenge by 63% of logistics decision makers in fashion and lifestyle. As challenges in the industry multiply, supply chain visibility has become a critical focus for strengthening logistics security (trend number two). Recent geopolitical disruptions and extreme weather events highlight the importance of an integrated and transparent supply chain, to respond to risks and minimise their impact.

Top challenges for the fashion and lifestyle industry:

    1. Cyber attacks
    2. Geopolitical disruptions
    3. Increasingly extreme weather
    4. Complexity of supply chains
    5. Rising fuel and energy costs
